Topic for Spring 2026: Baroque Music as a Global Phenomenon

Traditionally understood as having encompassed the 1600–1750 period in Europe only, Baroque music actually extended to the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Explorers established a global network of knowledge of the wonders of the world that included music and musical instruments. This course features lectures that present a rich array of Baroque compositions; students engage with the course materials through listening assignments, discussion, performance, brief essays, podcasts, and short presentations. For the final project, students will pursue research that identifies Baroque music encountered as a global phenomenon today, such as in cinematic soundtracks, in modern arrangements of J.S. Bach, or in ringtones featuring Vivaldi’s iconic Seasons.
